Battle rifle.

You have no big bore rifle

Many answers here work.

IMHO, hard to go wrong with FAL in .308

I just added a scoped hunting rifle to my collection. It will take down almost any big game in N. America. I bet it would work on two-legged animals as well.

Except if there be 20 of them coming at ya!!:confused_ma:

Randy, you are really into the Stainless Steel.

Yup, FAL, M1A. Either one will not let ya down. M1A has less working parts though. Slight edge there. But the ergo on the FAL is better.

It works better when there is one of me coming at 20 of them, on my terms.

That's what hunting is all about.

Either get a 1911 (I own a Sig GSR... ) or a Glock.
Both fun as hell to shoot.

Btw, I was very anti-glock until I finally broke down and bought one....they're great. I now carry a Glock27 everywhere I go.

From the staff at Jensen Arms (Loveland, Colorado): "We don't like shiny guns". There is a good reason for this.

I got a COLT .45 Government model from a buddy today, he needed some cash and offered that to me, i grabbed it fast, went and put some rounds through it, WHAT A WONDERFUL GUN!! I am in love with it. I LOVE my Glock 21 too, but this Colt is super sweeeeeeeeet, nice looking too, real nice looking gun. Its an officers version. Best thing is, I got it real cheap, didnt take advantage of my buddy or anything but we made a real nice deal, these COLTS really hold their value.

You have some nice firearms - nothing low ball in that group. I do think you need a few things for distance.
My picks:
Savage scoped bolt action in .30-06 - nice rifle for the money
FN-FAL or M1A in .308 - nothing exotic - just plain Jane
AK in 7.62 x 39 - still a few good deals out there

Not in the distance category, but you might also consider a .45 ACP 1911-style pistol. (I'm an old-school type of guy - my G/F calls me a fossil!)

You might also consider a rifle or carbine in 357/38.

I'm a big fan of the 7.62MM/308 (and the M14/M1as and FALs that eat it), but with prices what they are now, I wouldn't go jumping into that caliber.

Maybe AK or M1 Garand?

Re: Yet another "What Gun" thread

You need a higher caliber semi-auto rifle.

I agree with others on the main battle rifle, but also, get yourself a small packer.

I like the Bond Arms in .45LC/.410...

Was thinking the samething, that would make 4 guns that could all shoot the same round.

I thought about that once - almost bought a rifle.

However, then the rifle will be ballistically challenged - not enough oomph, unless you handload specific rounds for it.

Then - if you handload rounds for the rifle specifically - you run the risk of blowing a pistol if you get one of the rifle rounds mixed in with it.

IMHO, you're better to bite the bullet and get a good .308

Re: Yet another "What Gun" thread

+1 on the FAL or M14/M1A

Yes, the ammo prices for .308 have increased sharply just like the other calibers. However, these rifles and the ammo, seemingly, are only going to get more expensive. Research, buy soon and plenty, and be done with it.

I have been fixating on a 4 inch 45 for a while but have never shot one.

Hows it shoot. How is the recoil and can you get back on target?

Any help here?

I like the battle rifle Idea. It should go up in value if we get the Dem President and Congress in 08.

Re: Yet another "What Gun" thread

I agree on the battle rifle part. But I skew towards the AK and the SKS. Simple, cheap, and handle neglect quite well.

An accurate centerfire bolt action rifle should be in there too--something that will "reach out and touch someone", so to speak. Surplus Mausers are always a good choice, as can be the Mosins.

Pistol-caliber carbines have their place, but you really are limited to about 100 yds. The 7.62X39 takes you out to 300 yds or so, and the Mosin's 7.62X54R is ballistically similar to the .30-06, so 800+ yds is not out of the question. You of course must be able to hit something at whatever range you choose, but don't dismiss the sphincter-clenching effect of bullets whizzing by you from who-knows-where.

Whatever you get, and with what you already have: PRACTICE!

Now, do you want a serious gun you can bet your life on which will take all the abuse and neglect you can throw at it or do you want a toy which requires constant cleaning, maintenance, upkeep, and lubrication? And oh yeah, only one qualifies as a 'real' battle rifle.

NO toys, that is the point, ($$$) not a concern for this.

Well, I'll say this about her... she doesn't seem to have a problem handling that Garand. I've seen a lot of pics on a lot of gun boards of guys who can't hold their FAL or M1A level.

Re: Yet another "What Gun" thread

I just gotta speak out on a few of the misconceptions here.

First, the AK is NOT an inaccurate round, nor an inaccurate rifle. Like any tool, you just need to practice with it. And if you are looking for a 500 yard tack driver, then 7.63x39 is probably NOT the round you should be considering. NEITHER IS THE .223! .308 OR LARGER is where you want to be.

The M1 Garand, according to George Patton was 'The best battle rifle' he ever came across. That still holds true. And if you WANT to mount optics to one, let me know and I'll go dig out my contact list of WHO has those mounts available. Just like the M14, the Garand CAN have a regular scope mounted on it with a detachable scope mount. VERY SIMILAR to the M14 designed scope mount.

The 'bullpup' designed rifle that Israeli woman is holding (I WOULD NEVER CALL ANY WOMAN HOLDING A WEAPON A GIRL) is a Tavor.

If you want to consider a .357/.38 (or a .44 sp/.44mag) consider Cimmaron Arms. I particularly like the take down models myself.

FINALLY, why in the world would that last young lady NEED an M1 Garand? Looks to me like she could 'hunt a bear with a switch' and win...:laugh_m:
